Why do some people look back at Communism as a noble enterprise?

Communism Was Never a Good Thing

A recent series in the New York Times treats it as a righteous experiment conducted in less than ideal conditions.

I’m old enough to have visited East Bloc nations during the Cold War and will never forget the experience. Socialism/Communism is not, nor has it ever been good for the people. It leads to shoddy quality, lack of choice, shortages and ultimately starvation.

Michael Yosef Miller · October 31, 2017 at 11:24 pm

When capitalism fails to equitably distribute wealth, communism starts looking appealing to people. Just dogmatically preaching against its evils without aiding the economically insecure isn’t going to stop anything.

Whitney Walp · October 31, 2017 at 11:24 pm

Liberal educators forcing their ideology on young people are trying to promote communism. Move to Europe you dont belong in this country

John Meehleder · October 31, 2017 at 11:24 pm

People hear about Communism when they’re young and say, “That sounds like a good idea” because on paper, it sounds fair. If they still support it when their older it’s because they hate wealthy people and America. It’s more of a religion than a practical form of government.

Karin Schoonmaker Fullam · October 31, 2017 at 11:24 pm

Any “righteous experiment” which results in the killing of millions who dare to whisper disagreement, confiscates personal property, gives ultimate control to the government elites, and facilitates the equal spread of misery never was righteous at all. It’s a hell on earth.

I guess I missed a few chapters. To think that a year ago the Democratic party almost nominated a socialist. Although the Democratic party has not nominated a good candidate since John F Kennedy. Meanwhile I must have missed some chapters to somewhere. I am 47 years old and my growing up here’s the thing this country was most concerned about was a possible Third World War the fear of a communist takeover. The Soviet Union was the boogeyman and we were taught to believe that we might very well be the underdog in the matchup if that proverbial third war took place. Eventually we came to break the Soviet Union thank you President Reagan and we found out that not only was the Soviet Union not as much a threat as we thought. The Russian government was beginning to realize that communism as we knew it really didn’t work and they change their government significantly to more of a republic. It still has a communist own but it isn’t what it used to be. Because communism doesn’t work socialism doesn’t work and people want to tell me that there such thing as Democratic socialism well yeah there is. But it doesn’t work. It puts the government in control of all the finances and management

Jason Hobik · October 31, 2017 at 11:24 pm

There is this sick notion that socialism/communism is great…it just hasn’t been implemented properly. It’s the definition of insanity. Trying the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. Judging by the support for the likes of Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, this type of insanity is infecting America once again.

Oh professor, sir, may I ask a question. Communism sounds like it is the answer to equality and fairness. I understand that. But I was reading that in Russia and other communist states only a small number or the citizens are accepted into the Communist Party and most of the wealth of those countries is held by Communist Party officials. How can that be professor if they are truly communist societies ? I also read that the major communist countries were created by violence and force against all the people not just the wealthy not peaceful democratic process. Is that also true professor ? So why do you think communism is the answer to replace capitalist society ? And last, professor, you have lectured often on the evil of slavery here in the US but what about the enslavement and displacement of millions of Russians under the rule of the communist party ? How did that promote equality and fairness? From my reading, it appears that slavery in the US never approached the number of people and casualties of slavery and displacement in Russia, Eastern Europe and China. What’s that ? You are dismissing me from the class ? For asking you to enlighten us with your learned study of communism ? Really ?……

Josh Harben · October 31, 2017 at 11:24 pm

Kibbutz were communist. All it really means is sharing wealth. Having some money, it is not something I’m particularly interested in, but if it were paired with democratic freedoms, say at a micro level or in a small agrarian society, why not?

Roy Tieman · October 31, 2017 at 11:24 pm

Seems people are living with their head in the sand. The road to communism has been going on for decades by both government and the people who strives for it, primarily liberal elitist by indoctrinating the naive and stupid. We the people, parents allowed it by allowing the formation of the Department of Liberal Indoctrination sometimes referred to as the Department of Education. Hell, even Hitler knew it begins with the children. Seems it took him 20 years after being thrown out of the miltary to rise to power by indoctrination of the children. The day we allow the taking of the guns will be the day we lose to communism. Don’t believe it look at history, many, many examples. Oh, be assured the liberal elitist will tell you differently while having candy and freebies in one hand and a gun in the other. Enjoy while you can communism until the liberal elitist decide your expendable and no longer needed. Maybe then you will realized how stupid you were to believe their lies. Too late.

My family is E. European, we struggled under both fascism and communism in their turn, and I served in the Peace Corps in E. Europe after The Wall fell in 1989. To see American Conservatives today so proudly embracing the people and tenets of these two systems is stunning. Will there be anything left of this country in 2020? I don’t know. How could you? How COULD YOU.

Michael Morgan · October 31, 2017 at 11:24 pm

Communism, a form of government developed by Marx, a pathetic loser who refused to work and provide for his family, is the absolute greatest evil ever turned loose upon the Earth. It will always result in misery and death. Quit trying, quit asking “if only;” multiple cultures have tried this nonsense across the globe and it never works. Abandon this horrible pipe dream.

Kevin Mandrews · October 31, 2017 at 11:24 pm

I wouldn’t say communism was ever a good thing, but Marx was among the first people to start thinking about how large-scale industrial technologies and mechanization impact society. He just didn’t have the right answers to any of these new questions. Lenin also recognized the importance of technology to the communist ideology; he defined communism as “Soviet power plus the electrification of the whole country.” Communism wasn’t a good thing but it was the first technology-based ideology. There may be some lessons to learn since technological disruption has only gotten more dusruptive since the days of Marx and Lenin.

Jeanette Clinkunbroomer · October 31, 2017 at 11:24 pm

At its best, communism is pie-in-the-eky. Might look good on paper, but not really applicable to the human race — which is why it always end up being brutally enforced by a tiny group of totalitarian dictators.

Mike L Willard · October 31, 2017 at 11:24 pm

Of course, today communism is viewed favorable because our education system is so blinded by PC leftist socialist liberals that they refuse to acknowledge the evils of communism / socialism.

Lynn Stanovich · October 31, 2017 at 11:24 pm

Ask Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren. They preach the “virtues” of communism to a generation that knows nothing about it. Those are the people falling into the “communism is a benevolent ideology” trap. It’s time to use our education system to teach our youth exactly what communism was/is. Those of us who grew up in the Cold War and who elected Reagan know what communism is. It’s time all Americans did.

Lou Kreuzer · October 31, 2017 at 11:24 pm

America during the so-called Robber Baron days achieved far more and better industrialization and moderization than a communist system ever did.

Brian Wallos · October 31, 2017 at 11:24 pm

There isn’t much philanthropy under communism or socialism is there? Yet clueless leftists romanticize their dictators who brutally kill .

Glen Dennis · October 31, 2017 at 11:24 pm

It’s the continued failure of our education system, it’s teachers and professor’s are mostly leftists….

James Smith · October 31, 2017 at 11:24 pm

Well, well, the NR does have a writer who has seen the evils of Communism, and it’s socialistic foundation.

This article would be shocking, had it been written by Mr French, Mr Goldberg, or another liberal socialistic minded author.

The “intellectual” liberals can’t grasp the fact that most responsible people just want an “honest” government that attends to the “mutual” interests of the people; and governs in a manner that inspires individual success, while maintaining freedom, with responsibility and accountability for all.

The liberals view of government is to cause equal results for all, regardless of work ethics, and self dependency. They crave power over the masses, to dictate that everyone enjoy equal results from the dedicated and responsible, by taxing them for the benefit of those who are irresponsible. This kind of Socialism is incompatible with a free society and Constitutional Republic, for it produces a base of poor captive voters that depends upon the elected government for the necessary provisions of life, for those who envy and covet the lifestyle of the responsible, but are unwilling to follow their example in earning it themselves.

Anyone who governs because of their sheer greed for the power to rule over others, are unfit to govern. It is those, and the covetness of the irresponsible who desire a Socialistic form of government.

Hillary Clinton and her minions are outraged, because she was not elected. They cherished the day, she would close down all those evil, hardworking coal miners; and take all the guns from those Bible beliving racists; and tax all those greedy hardworking responsible taxpayers, so her dependent minions could live a life of leisure at their expense. Their outrage became magnified, when they discovered that receiving public assistance might require some actual work, from those physically able!!!

Hillary’s kind of Socialism, and ordinary
Socialism, along with Communism are similiar fruits from the same corrupt tree!!!!!

Sakata Josue · October 31, 2017 at 11:24 pm

Communism the way it developed was not good. Yet Democratic Socialism has led to a high quality of life for many societies.

Still our fear and loathing of communism has led us to make foreign policy mistakes that affect us today.

Robert Strzelinski · October 31, 2017 at 11:24 pm

The greatest accomplishment the left can point to is communism, and it’s half-witted brother, socialism. It is a meat grinder for individual hopes, dreams, and lives. And all they have to say about it is, “More sausage, please.”

Bryan Noble · October 31, 2017 at 11:24 pm

Most people would expect someone with the last name of Noble to condemn communism for not being a noble enterprise. 🙂

Thomas Lindley · October 31, 2017 at 11:24 pm

The Communists murdered tens of millions of their own countrymen who opposed them. Is that what liberals finding admirable? Is that what they want in this country?

Polly Walden · October 31, 2017 at 11:24 pm

Because they are sick and stupid. No one who truly understands communism could hold it in any regard at all. It is a sick and preverted government.
