Republicans should say something, it’s their party. Democrats are being smart politically, just sit back and watch the fire burn.

earthboundsounds · October 31, 2017 at 10:27 pm

This article can be summarized by a single line:

>Republicans don’t care what President Trump does so long as they get tax reform.

gamefaqs_astrophys · October 31, 2017 at 10:27 pm

The Republicans who are refusing to take action against Trump and to protect Mueller are for all intents and purposes indistinguishable from outright traitors.

Scarlettail · October 31, 2017 at 10:27 pm

I disagree with everyone else here. I’m disappointed in the Democrats for not being more overt. What good does it do to “sit back and let the fire burn?” They should be contributing to the flames, dumping gas all over it. They should be starting ad campaigns across the country targeted at Trump, and they should have prominent leaders calling Trump a traitor every single day.

Dems have no spine. They expect Americans will just “get it” and that they don’t have to do any sort of branding or campaigning. Dems might not be in power but they sure as hell can make this fire even bigger. Every time Trump calls out Hillary the Democrats should retort that he’s stuck on the election or that he’s a hypocrite.

ChikenBBQ · October 31, 2017 at 10:27 pm

We should hit them as hard as they would hit us. Jesus fuck if hilldawg or Obama pulled even HALF of something like this people would be throwing bricks through windows. The GOP really fucked shit up this time and we need to make sure their shit gets *duly* fucked.

comeherebob · October 31, 2017 at 10:27 pm

No, aside from aggressively protecting Mueller’s investigation, Democrats should sit back and let a principled prosecutor do his job. Besides, they’ve already got “progressives” like TYT and Greenwald all up in their asses for “making up the Russian distraction” and not talking about the “real issues.”

ApolloX-2 · October 31, 2017 at 10:27 pm

Democrats should be much more forceful when it comes to their committees. The Judiciary Committee has completely let go of the Russia investigation to focus on Clinton, because of Chuck Grassley. The Intelligence Committee isn’t going anywhere either because Burr doesn’t want to subpoena people and once they found out they just started saying no while he shrugs his shoulders. Thats all in the Senate!

The House has people walking out mid questioning and aren’t subpoenaed back.

Democrats better remember all of this when they are on the campaign trail and hammer those traitorous Republicans everyday of the week on this. Don’t make this about anything other than this and make it about law abiding Americans versus a group of treasonous bastards.

Dems: Let’s be a little less racist and sexist and pass economically sensible policies that can benefit the work force, the environment, and the future of our society.

Electoral college and gerrymandered districts: NOOO!! GIVE EVERYTHING TO THE 1%!!!!!

SugarBear4Real · October 31, 2017 at 10:27 pm

Considering Manafort was the one who recommended Pence as VP, I would expect the GOP is going to hide and pretend this never happened.

schistkicker · October 31, 2017 at 10:27 pm

They’re stuck — any number of them have to see the writing on the wall (the ones that aren’t Hannity/Roy Moore allies or true-believer types, anyway). The biggest problem is that they’ve trained their electorate too well, and honed their political messages too well and played them too long. If they change course and speak up, their political careers will get squashed (and politicians are nothing if not ambitious in general) and they’ll get primaried hard from the crazy right. If they keep their heads down, they look like terrible people to everyone else, but they can plausibly keep the base (and their donors) happy by toeing the line, which means they might just see the other side of this whole thing.

ImWatchingTelevision · October 31, 2017 at 10:27 pm

When they’re silent in times like these they’re just waiting for someone to craft the official party message. If it’s really bad, it can take up to 3 days to get a message that the hive mind will buy into.

Thoughtcolt5994 · October 31, 2017 at 10:27 pm

For real, it’s time to start calling them what they are – accomplices, and what they are participating in is treason.

zackks · October 31, 2017 at 10:27 pm

WAPO, you drop this headline while continuing to call flagrant lies, ‘untruths’ or some other softpeddling nonsense. Perhaps you should be more blunt too and call things what they are to reinforce that the lies are not ok.

snugwithnugs · October 31, 2017 at 10:27 pm

I am so tired of Dem politicians that act above the fray. Jump in assholes. Fight. Stop letting them kick your ass the way Trump kicked the other GOP candidates.

swings_left · October 31, 2017 at 10:27 pm

Republicans are silent because they know they’re caught in the web and that the investigation includes the important leaders of the GOP… including Speaker of the House Paul Ryan, Congressman and former House majority leader Kevin McCarthy (CA), and Congressman Dana Rohrabacher.

Ryan and McCarthy knew Trump was tied to Putin as early as June 15, 2016 and instructed other Republicans in their conservation, “No leaks. . . . This is how we know we’re a real family here.”

Neri25 · October 31, 2017 at 10:27 pm

But that might hurt their fee fees

dating_derp · October 31, 2017 at 10:27 pm

You know, I think I’ve got it. Republicans have stuck it out with Trump because they’re trying to save face. We should distance Trump from the GOP in our rhetoric so that we can all unite against him.

GOP saves face, we get some much needed bipartsan unity, and we end this presidency sooner.

aeromechanicalace · October 31, 2017 at 10:27 pm

Democrats should sack up and start compromising left and punching right, rather than the opposite as they’re currently doing.

tearfueledkarma · October 31, 2017 at 10:27 pm

If the Dems come out strong the R’s will twist it as being attacked and the base will defend. Better to just let them all let it sink in.

WaterDownTheRiver · October 31, 2017 at 10:27 pm

I feel like this is very smart on the Republicans side. A lot is still up on the air and despite everyone and their mother now being a legal expert with just the initial indictment documents, a lot is yet to be seen. Apparently this is just the tip of the iceberg too and is hoping to lead to more indictments.

The Republicans, Democrats, and the US citizens all need to step back and let the legal process go so we can see what truly happened, when it happened, who it benefited, etc. If everyone jumps down each others throats about this we’ll have another bullshit Hil-Dog emails scandal that is just a shitting match by both sides.

Its smart for the Republicans to watch it play out before instantly jumping to conclusions, because if they pick one boat and it ends up being the wrong one their party will be as divided and ruined as the Democratic party was post Presidential Election. They are in control and can’t let it break apart further than the Republican party already has with the current split that is happening (Old Guard Republicans vs. Populace Movement Republicans).

RadBadTad · October 31, 2017 at 10:27 pm

Silent? I see republicans around me them screaming their damned heads off. It’s all lies, spin, and gymnastics, but they’re certainly not being *silent*.

coaltrain151 · October 31, 2017 at 10:27 pm

call them out. it’s time to get on the phones and demand Republican lawmakers state what position they take. let them know we vote, and we don’t forget!

TheAlmightyGawd · October 31, 2017 at 10:27 pm

Isnt this just a week after 3 made declarations that Trump is fucking up

MBAMBA0 · October 31, 2017 at 10:27 pm

It does not help that Obama was out there today making a speech about building bridges or whatnot.

This is a time where Democrats need to be DEFINING US as the opposition – this reaching across the aisle BS HAS TO STOP. Its like bargaining with hostage takers.

suibhnesuibhne · October 31, 2017 at 10:27 pm

I think the Left needs to publish a shameless troll rag, like a Murdoch publication, but left wing. Make it serious, make character assassinations, unsubstantiated claims, refer incessantly to candidates who weren’t successful for years after, and take donations from the growing number of tech millionaires (who are mostly left leaning).

We obviously need to speak the language of stupidity, and not even Buzzfeed has mastered that.

therevengeofsh · October 31, 2017 at 10:27 pm

Democrats should be careful. This is already be portrayed as a partisan witch hunt by some powerful media entities. I feel like they are doing all that they can really do as a party out of power.

Let Mueller do his job, protect Mueller as best they can, and watch the Republican party destroy itself.

CaliforniaShmopper · October 31, 2017 at 10:27 pm

Can we just start calling them what they are – **The Russian Party** of the United States?

These bastards are traitors.

rAxxt · October 31, 2017 at 10:27 pm

Good article. I thought this part was juicy:

>Republicans are going to be asked again and again at every news conference and interview their reaction to the indictments. If they are wise and want to preserve some semblance of fitness to govern, Senate and House GOP leadership should spare members the constant questions by putting out a joint statement agreeing with Warner and Schumer, namely these are serious matters and they will not tolerate pardons or other interference with special prosecutor’s Robert S. Mueller III’s work. From here on out Republican members can then simply refer back to the statement.

>Lawmakers on both sides should cease deflection and cut to the chase: If Trump tries to shut down the investigation or raises the prospect of pardons, they will insist upon impeachment proceedings.
