In my opinion, the constantly changing schedule is abusive on workers and their families. And it prevents scheduling things like a second job, child care and continuing education.

When you don’t know when you will be expected to work from day to day or week to week your employer is effectively dictating what you can do with your off time. The story in the first few paragraphs of the story details what I went through during and after high school – an unknown schedule where I would be expected to drop everything to come and work for near minimum wage. It’s a great tactic for employers to keep their employees under control, and makes it very hard to get ahead or look elsewhere. It is also “necessary” because employers refuse to hire enough staff for fear that they might “over staff” for a position and leave employees with some less than 100% efficient time at work. The situation has a fairly simple solution, but the benefit is completely on the workers, and would not immediately be seen by employers, so it probably won’t happen willingly. Vote and urge your reps to support worker friendly legislation!

Some days it feels like the last 100 years never even happened.

We need 6 hour work days. I only get about 4 hours of work done a day, and can fairly easily get all that done in 2-3. I’m really just wasting time on Reddit and playing solitaire, when I could be at home wasting time on Reddit and playing solitaire.

I work in edmonton and lots of our labour jobs are oil field related, I’ve been offered 40 hour work week jobs and been very clear that I wanted 40 hours and then expected to work 80 a few months in cause “that’s what we all do”

A long time ago, People use to rise and go to bed with the sun and that’s when you worked. The family, village, or group was all on this schedule. There is something good for humans about consistency and schedule. At some level, we need it and crave it.
