Rachel Maddow reports on Brian Kemp, secretary of state for Georgia, who has not stepped down from that job even though he is running for governor, putting over 53,000 new, disproportionately black voter registrations on hold just a month ahead of the election.

Brian Kemp Holding Up 53K Voter Registrations As He Runs For Governor | Rachel Maddow | MSNBC

Michael J. Schaefer · October 11, 2018 at 6:06 pm

This needs to be talked about Every day on every broadcast

Laverne Keith · October 11, 2018 at 6:20 pm

Stop persecuting blacks in this country. Suppressing the right to vote is ILLEGAL…PERIOD!!!! We have already worked over 400 plus years for free and helped you and your descendants to become wealthy and powerful and that still isn't enough. Brian Kemp do the right thing and have those applications processed or you should go to jail for a crime.

Cronus · October 11, 2018 at 6:21 pm

Brian Kemp is a worthless P.O.S.!!

Grace O · October 11, 2018 at 6:31 pm

Brownqt :) · October 11, 2018 at 6:36 pm

I went to GA website to check status of my registration on the last day. The website was nowhere to be found when I signed in to link.

After coming into office in 2010, Kemp implemented the new rule, often referred to as “exact match.” He initially gave new voters 40 days to clarify any discrepancies or their voter registration would be canceled.

The process was approved by the Justice Department, but civil rights groups sued Kemp over the practice in 2016, saying that it disproportionately discriminated against minorities because an overwhelming number of the nearly 35,000 applications that had been suspended or canceled were from minorities. Kemp settled the case in February 2017 and agreed to essentially stop using the process.

But then in April 2017, Georgia lawmakers enacted a statute that authorized the state to continue to use the process, but it was tweaked to give residents 26 months to correct any discrepancies before they were removed from voter rolls.

The number of people eligible to vote is higher than in the 2016 presidential election, even though Kemp’s office canceled more than 668,000 registrations last year. Registrations in Georgia can be canceled when inactive voters don’t have any contact with election officials for several years, or when they move out of state, die, are convicted of a felony or are declared mentally incompetent.Abrams has emphasized registering nonwhites, unmarried women and millennials in her effort to become Georgia’s Abrams has emphasized registering nonwhites, unmarried women and millennials in her effort to become Georgia’s governor.

Dems are leaving the dems party Walk Away movement They March in DC this month

Jo Pao · October 11, 2018 at 7:49 pm

The Republicrat party is so despicable that cheating via the electoral college, massive difference in amount of senators per voter, massive gerrymandering is not enough. They also need to remove voting rights from massive amount of people. Seriously, they all belong in jail. Oh, and flush the supreme court of any "justices" that were elected by an electoral college president.

Ingwer Schwensen · October 11, 2018 at 7:49 pm

I wonder whether Americans, who I guess are kind of used to the widespread suppression of voting rights in their country, can fathom how politically barbaric these practices look from a European standpoint. Sure, such blatant manipulations make the US more interesting to watch, but in reality it turns monitoring American politics and society into an act of observing a strange if not, sorry, freakish dystopia.

pittarak1 · October 11, 2018 at 7:53 pm

Sounds like the US ‘democracy’ process is something like you’d find in a corrupt 3rd world country?! Your founding fathers (& mothers) must be turning in their graves! ☹️

Jo Pao · October 11, 2018 at 7:57 pm

If 4/5th of the people vote dem, would dems win? Would be just due to the amount of republican cheating.

tesladrive1 · October 11, 2018 at 7:58 pm

Republican's stacking the election in thier favor? No, say it ain't true! Are the Russians helping them this time too? Wouldn't doubt it!!

richard bradley · October 11, 2018 at 8:00 pm

Seems like the KKK is alive & well in America. Voter suppression in all its glory

Grand Wonder · October 11, 2018 at 8:00 pm

This is nothing new! Republicans kept 7.3 million non-white people from voting in the 2016 election using a voter suppression scheme they called "Crosscheck," in which they systematically went through the voting lists from across the country and crossed out the names of non-white voters whose first and last names were similar to one another. Republicans falsely accused these people with similar first and last names of registering to vote more than once in multiple states when they were simply different people with similar first and last names. With this scheme, Republicans kept 7.3 million Black, Latino, Asian, and Muslim voters from practicing their right to vote! They also threw out numerous votes that were already been cast by non-white voters by intentionally tricking the system into believing these people had registered to vote in multiple states despite never producing a single evidence that such a thing ever happened!

People have got to realize Republicans don't play by the rules! They scam the system to get what they want! Think for a minute, how do registered Republicans that made up only 26% of the American population control every aspect of government? Simple, they cheat their way into power! They rigged elections using "Crosscheck" and other means, such as gerrymandering the electoral maps to minimize the effects of non-white people's votes, intentionally eliminating polling places in communities that have large Black, Latino, and other brown people so as to make it hard for these people to cast their votes and force them to wait 15-30 times longer in lines than white people just to cast their votes, they set shorter voting hours for black and brown people's polling places in order to limit the numbers of black and brown people from voting, and they require non-white people to show voter ID and proof of citizenship in order to register to vote or cast a vote at the polling place itself. These are all Republicans' schemes to make it hard for non-white people to vote or even shut them down completely! The reason why Republicans want to keep non-white people from voting is because these people tend to vote overwhelmingly more for Democratic candidates over Republican ones!

BTW, when I say 26% of registered Republicans control all aspects of the US government, I mean it! The presidency, Senate, House of Representatives, and the entire judicial systems, including the Supreme Court, are controlled by Republicans! There is a reason for that! — they scheme and cheat their way into power! We all saw how Republicans stonewalled Merrick Garland from the Supreme Court for over 14 months, but then had no problem with jamming Kavanaugh into the Supreme Court despite him having multiple sexual assault charges and Donald Drumpf keeping over 100,000 pages of documents from the Kavanaugh's Senate hearing. And that's not include thousands of more pages that the FBI had gathered on Kavanaugh during his tenure as a prosecutor during the Clinton administration that Trump and the Republicans had kept from the US Senate during Kavanaugh hearing! This is simply more proof of Republicans' lies, schemes, hypocrisies, and dirty tactics!

BTW, if you want to learn more about "Crosscheck" and how the Republicans have been rigging elections, I suggest you type in "Crosscheck" and "Greg Palast" on the Youtube space bar. There, you will find numerous videos hosted by Greg Palast in which he explains how the Republicans have been rigging the elections for the last 25 years in order to hold power over our government! Greg Palast is an award-winning investigative journalist for the Rolling Stone Magazine and he has done decades-long investigations into these matters.

Joseph Skinner · October 11, 2018 at 8:10 pm

Now its coming together. Kavanaugh implanted into Supreme Court to, not only protect drumpf, but uphold voter suppression tactics employed by Republican party.

FUN FACT · October 11, 2018 at 8:11 pm

The Republican party = Fascism

Onair Carna · October 11, 2018 at 8:21 pm

How is this legal? How does a guy get to run in an election he’s in charge of? How does he get to keep peoples applications to vote sitting in a desk drawer? Why does Georgia even bother having elections?

Mark Wick · October 11, 2018 at 8:21 pm

He's only getting away with it because we're letting him! I bet if 5,000 people showed up at his HOME (not his office), carrying nooses and pitchforks he'd change his tune right quick… and the rest of the GPO ilk would get the message!

Doc Tom · October 11, 2018 at 8:28 pm

Yup, Bugs Bunny, Abe Lincoln, Cleopatra, Jesse James and King George will all have to register and show proof of residency.

KING CANNON · October 11, 2018 at 8:35 pm

Like I said before. if the votes don't count and he automatically wins then he should be considered illegitimate governor and whatever bs he tries to set in place for those people out there should be flagged down.

William Bunting · October 11, 2018 at 8:40 pm

That issue could go all the way to the Supreme Court, and we now know in advance how that “Judgement” would go.

kj197734 · October 11, 2018 at 8:58 pm

He is simply afraid of losing an election. He knows going forward that he will lose with the votes so he is holding them up to cheat the election.

Sheryl Whauwhau · October 11, 2018 at 9:37 pm

Another rigged election, this is just wrong, big time. Kemp should be disqualified, and resign.

Eugenia Washington · October 11, 2018 at 9:39 pm

How is it that Caucasians people always have to CHEAT when there is an voting race?

Major Flavors California · October 11, 2018 at 9:46 pm

America isn’t as free as you think. If someone gives you a right then it’s obvious that they can manipulate those rights at any moment and for any reason. The more local your decisions the more effective they are so start by participating and voting in local and state politics regularly.

Eugenia Washington · October 11, 2018 at 9:50 pm

WHAT are they afraid of? If I were Caucasian knowing that my father or mother were RACIST, I would be so ashamed of them!

B Woody · October 11, 2018 at 10:25 pm

Lock him up, lock him up !

Greg Cantelli · October 11, 2018 at 11:03 pm

A person running for office should not get to decide who gets to vote.

Mick West · October 11, 2018 at 11:05 pm

It appears there are a lot of corrupt pollies in the U.S. They seem to be on the same side also. I suppose corruption filters down from the top.

newbeginnings · October 11, 2018 at 11:06 pm

Geez they don't need the Russians to hack the elections, do they?

the beauty of me is that i`m very rich · October 11, 2018 at 11:22 pm

Just one question, what the so called Democratic party politicians are doing to prevent this to happens in the first place?

VILMA CABAN BABILONIA · October 11, 2018 at 11:40 pm

53,000?? What a POS Kemp is.

Grandraplady akaAMB · October 11, 2018 at 11:42 pm

When you have to cheat to win. Maybe that's the only way the GOP knows. It's rampant across the nation.

Tyrone Shoelace · October 11, 2018 at 11:59 pm

Someone should drag this SOB out of his office and stomp a mud hole out of his azz. Im getting tired of these useless punks hiding behind security. Step out you Fkn Punk !
